Gators’ late scores upend EA JV

St. Amant’s junior varsity scored two touchdowns late in the fourth quarter after nearly a scoreless game throughout to triumph over East Ascension Wednesday night at Spartan Stadium.

Knotted up 0-0 at half-time, East Ascension’s Irvin Nash sacked St. Amant quarterback Tyler Guillory end the Gator’s opening possession of the second half.

With East Ascension pinned at their own 7-yard line on the ensuing possession, Craig Bergeron dropped Darrell Spears for a yard loss before Justin Rome sacked quarterback Mike Oubre for another yard loss.

On the first play of the next series Aveion Williams recovered Guillory’s fumble at the St. Amant 46, but the Gators’ defense bowed and forced the Spartans into a three-and-out.

Nash hit Guillory for a 2-yard loss to end St. Amant’s next possession. Oubre hit Jamie Williams for a 13-yard connection on the ensuing drive to convert a third down but JarMarcus Jarvis was dropped for a loss and the Spartans were forced to kick.

St. Amant’s Logan Boudreaux touched the ball on the punt and Bryon Dempsey recovered for the Spartans at the St. Amant 22 but after two short runs Rivett was penalized for grounding and the Gators were unscathed.

Guillory’s 7-yard keeper into the end zone capped the ensuing 10-play, 90-yard drive. Guillory kept for 22 yards to ignite the possession before Chevis Fairburn hit Britton Day for  4-yard loss. Guillory would keep twice for 9 yards to midfield before hitting Breck Schexnayder for a 21-yard reception.

Aaron Burns sacked Guillory for a 5-yard loss after Matt Marrero’s 8-yard pickup for a facemask penalty against the Spartans set up St. Amant and Day’s 19-yard run set up the score. Justin Manton’s kick gave the Gators a 7-0 lead with 1:53 left to play.

Shaft Graves hit Spears at the EA 5 on the kickoff and two plays later Justin Bumgardner sacked Rivett in the end zone for a safety with 1:35 left to play to make it 9-0.

Graves recovered the onsides kick in a mad scramble at the EA 42 and Guillory kept for 22 yards before Nash hit him for a 2-yard loss. Day hit pay dirt from 21 yards two plays later on an end around and Manton’s kick reflected the final tally with 35.9 seconds remaining.

Rivett hit Williams for an 11-yard pickup on the ensuing possession before rushing for 5 more as time expired.

St. Amant hosts Dutctown in junior varsity action next week at The Pit, while East Ascension hosts Destrehan at Spartan Stadium.
