The East Ascension freshmen roared out to a 21-0 half-time lead and never looked back in a 34-6 victory over St. Amant Wednesday evening at Spartan Stadium.

The Spartans took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter. St. Amant drove to the EA 31 on the ensuing possession before Ryan Knighten intercepted Bryant Bourgeois to kill the six-play drive.

Bourgeois kept for 14 yards to midfield to kick start the possession before hitting Cody Ficklin for a 16-yard completion before an illegal block send the Gators backwards.

Dennis Duronslet carried three straight times on the next series falling short of a first down before Darren Sharper picked up 15 yards on a fake punt that was negated. The Spartans recovered the bobbled punt on the replay at the St. Amant 45 but failed to convert.

Tyler Villavaso’s punt pinned the Gators deep in their own territory and Norman Bougere recovered Bourgeois’ fumbled pitch a play later at the St. Amant 22. Quarterback Chase Rivett hit DeAndrus Ennis for an 8-yard completion before Eric Sharper rumbled 10 yards to the Gator 4. Sharper plowed over a play later and Adam Ray’s kick gave the Spartans a 14-0 lead with 4:31 left in the half.

Anthony Color dropped Bourgeois for a 5-yard loss to halt the Gators’ ensuing possession and JarMarcus Jarvis’ 21-yard touchdown scamper capped the Spartans’ 3-play, 61-yard drive. Rivett hit Jarvis out of the backfield for a 17-yard catch and run before keeping for another 17 yards. Villavaso’s kick gave East Ascension a 21-0 lead with 1:39 left in the half.

Rivett connected with Sherwin Brooks for a 62-yard touchdown completion to open the second, giving the Spartans a 27-0 lead.

St. Amant got on the board with Andrew Allemond punched it in from 5 yards to cut it to 27-6 and Jarvis’ 11-yard touchdown gallop in the fourth quarter reflected the final tally.

East Ascension quarterback Chase Rivett carries on a 17-yard keeper in the second quarter as St. Amant’s Tyler Guitreau pursues.
