Ascension Christian’s Chrissy Swanson, Sophie Schexnayder and Krystal Braud defend a serve over the net in the Lady?Lions’ sweep of Bogalusa Tuesday evening.

Ascension Christian took advantage of a slew of Bogalusa errors to sweep 25-13, 25-4, 24-14 in non-district play Tuesday evening at AC’s gym.

“They had a lot of errors,” Ascension Christian head coach Lisa Pellegrin said. “We are still not as accurate on our sets as we need to be. We covered the court very well. There were no drop balls. We still need to gain experience to get over the next hump. We are in sync. We have our positions  down and we finally have been able to work our libero.”

Ascension Christian (6-16, 1-0) will make the Division V playoffs if they defeat their lone Division 4-V opponent Family Christian Oct. 23 as district champion in their first year playing varsity volleyball. The Lady Lions swept FCA 25-17, 25-12, 25-10 earlier in the season.

“They are new, too,” Pellegrin said of FCA. “They have more new players than I do. I have some that have played with me at Faith Academy.”

Megan Pellegrin led Ascension Christian with five aces, three kills, two blocks and three assists, while Chrissy Swanson had five aces and Sophie Schexnayder added two aces and two digs.

Bogalusa was led by Jemiela Castleberry who had three aces.

“In the district we are in, nobody knows anything about volleyball and they don’t want to,” said Bogalusa head coach Linda Pittman. “All they care about is football and basketball. We struggle to stay afloat but we are hanging in there. We came down here to play them because we can find anyone in our area to play.”

Castleberry’s ace gave Bogalusa a 2-1 lead in the first game before Ascension Christian went on a 5-0 run courtesy of three aces from Swanson. The Lady Lions went ahead 11-3 on Krystal Braud’s ace and used another 6-0 run to go up 17-4 courtesy of Pellegrin’s kill and Schexnayder’s ace.

Samantha Plank’s ace made it 22-10 before Shakira Miller’s service error set up game point on Castleberry’s.

Ascension Christian never trailed in the second game jumping out to a 10-0 lead on Pellegrin’s service that featured four aces. Swanson’s ace and Rhegan Jones’ kill gave the Lady Lions a 14-1 lead before Braud’s ace made it 18-2. Schexnayder’s kill set up game point on Emily Freeman’s return error.

The Lady Lions never trailed in the third game as well. Castleberry’s ace knotted it up 3-3 before the Ascension Christian went on a 12-3 run courtesy of two kills from Plank and two aces by Schexnayder and Jones. Miller’s dink cut it to 15-6 before Pellegrin’s ace made it 20-9. Miller’s service error set up match point on her return error.

Ascension Christian fell 24-26, 25-21, 12-25, 14-25 to West St. John Monday.
