EA junior varsity breaks away from St. Amant

ST. AMANT - The East Ascension junior varsity lost the turnover battle but won the game, 13-7, over the St. Amant junior varsity in the second game of the Freshmen/Junior Varsity Jamboree at The Pit Saturday midday Aug. 30.

East Ascension turned the ball over twice to St. Amant’s one, but used a 42-yard touchdown run by freshman JarMarkus Jarvis for the win.

Emerson Foster was 4 for 6 for 65 yards and a touchdown for East Ascension.

St. Amant quarterback Matt Marrero was dropped by Aaron Burns and Sabastian Ganoa for losses of 1 and 9 yards on the first possession of the game and Randell Williams returned Tyler Guillory’s punt 20 yards to the Gator 25.

Darrell Spears picked up 10 yards on the first play but Jay Gipson dropped him for no game on fourth down.

Burns hit Marrero for a 3-yard loss on the ensuing possession forcing the Gators to punt but Williams fumbled on the return and Jeremy Huff recovered at the St. Amant 49.

Donavon Hill sacked Guillory on the next possession for a 4-yard loss and East Ascension capped a 13-play, 65-yard drive when Foster connected with Nathan Ray on a 35-yard hitch and run into the end zone. Michael Stafford’s kick gave the Spartans a 7-0 lead with 5.8 seconds left in the half.

East Ascension overcame an illegal procedure penalty that negated a 41-yard touchdown pass from Foster to a streaking Williams down the left sideline seven plays earlier and a holding penalty after a 16-yard completion to Jared Hill two plays earlier.

Jarvis’ run capped the Spartans’ 5-play, 58-yard drive to open the second half. Williams returned the kickoff 39 yards and a pass interference gave the Spartans life on third down.

St. Amant drove 69 yards to the EA 11 behind Grady Miles’ 43-yard run on the ensuing possession but Irwin Nash recovered Guillory’s fumbled pitch at the Spartan 20.

Chris Delaune recovered an East Ascension fumble a play later and Britton Day capped the ensuing 7-play, 36-yard drive with a 2-yard burst up the gut. Justin Manton’s kick cut it to 13-7 with 2:02 left to play. Guillory kept for 14 yards on fourth down to keep the drive alive.

Foster recovered the onsides kick and kept to run the clock out after a pass interference call gave the Spartans a first down.
