Letter to the Editor - Healthcare legislation

Dear Editor:

As the Chief Nursing Officer for St. Elizabeth Hospital, I want to take a moment to recognize those legislators who made healthcare a priority this past legislative session. Tough votes had to be made, and I applaud those lawmakers who carried through with their promise to protect healthcare, patients and our local hospitals.

As a caregiver in the hospital, I see firsthand how important healthcare services are to our community. Because of decisions made this year by the legislature, we are able to continue to keep our ER open 24/7 for emergencies and have experts on hand in case the unexpected happens.

Funding cuts affect everyone. They lead to the elimination of services; they cause longer wait times in the ER because we cannot hire as many doctors and nurses; and they affect the type of life-saving equipment that we can afford. I would like to personally thank the legislators who were recognized as Champions for Healthcare in our area for voting in support of hospitals and healthcare this session. They are Senators Jody Amedee and Troy Brown, and Representatives Ed Price, Eddie Lambert, Clay Schexnayder, and Johnny Berthelot.  It is because of them that we can continue to offer quality healthcare services to everyone in Ascension Parish.
