LETTER: Local representative thanks veterans

Staff Writer
Gonzales Weekly Citizen

During the 2008 Regular Legislative Session, I along with Sen. Jody Amedee, Rep. Eddie Lambert, and Rep. Elton Aubert co-authored SB644, which was signed into law as ACT695 by Gov. Bobby Jindal. This allowed the state to commission a Louisiana Veterans Honor Medal to recognize all honorably discharged veterans from our state.

On Sept. 16, I was honored to attend a ceremony directed by Secretary of Veteran Affairs Lane Carson. This event was held at the Gonzales Civic Center.

At this event, Gov. Jindal and the state legislative delegation, accompanied by several local officials, awarded over 200 medals to the brave men and women of our parish who served in the military. This event was very touching and brought out a great sense of pride in all who attended.

I would like to thank all those great Americans who received their medals. For those who were unable to attend the ceremony and were honorably discharged, please contact your senator or representative or call the Office of Veteran's Affairs to apply for your Louisiana Veterans Honor Medal.

Rep. M. J. “Mert” Smiley
