LETTER: Reader likes park plan

Continuing my interest in the Oak Grove Community Center and Park, I recently had the opportunity to speak with Ascension Parish Councilman Chris Loar, Ascension Parish Director of Recreation and Culture Garney Gautreau, and Oak Grove Historian Ira Paul Babin and received an update on plans for the Oak Grove facility.

The new building will be an enlarged, modernized facility that can be converted to many and various family and civic uses. Building structures to echo historical building designs that had been erected on the property during past “school years.” Also, an historical wall of selected pictures or memorabilia of yesteryears is being considered.

Landscape plans are outstanding, a green park that will afford a relief as it sits midst a cement-plus-cement environment of a busy commercial neighborhood. Safety fences to be camouflaged with green and/or blooming plantings and trees.

The playground will include activity equipment for various ages, but definitely provide a place  for young folks to enjoy the outdoors. All safety features are to be in before the formal opening of the playground. Just the place for stay-at-home moms or baby-sitting grandparents to visit with very young children in tow.

As grants, private donations and parish recreation monies are available, this park is becoming a beautiful Oak Grove Community Center. A space that will contain and continue the heritage of that area while affording the citizens a green place for their activities. A special “thank you” to all who are working so hard to make this a dream come true.
