LETTER: Social worker month noted

As you may know, March is National Professional Social Work Month, which provides an opportunity to express appreciation for the many ways that social workers help our community’s most vulnerable members.

For more than 100 years, these individuals have addressed society’s problems and inadequacies with their own remarkable blend of compassion, knowledge and expertise.

In Ascension, as well as countless other communities, social workers help people overcome some of life’s most difficult challenges: poverty, discrimination, abuse, addiction, physical illness, divorce, loss, unemployment, educational problems, disability and mental illness. Chances are we find social workers in nearly every facet of community life – in our schools, hospitals, mental health clinics, senior centers, prisons, corporations, and in many public and private agencies.

Professional social workers make a meaningful and humanitarian contribution to Ascension, as well as communities all over the world. Their influence is widespread and demonstrates a deep and abiding commitment to help individuals and families in need, something members of my profession also understand. In gratitude for all they’ve done with respect for the dedication it represents, it is appropriate that we take a moment and simply say “thank you.”
