LETTER: Reintroducing Freedom of Choice Act

Staff Writer
Gonzales Weekly Citizen

Because Ascension Parish has a strong pro-life, religious representation, the purpose of this letter is to inform this community of the impending Freedom of Choice Act that will be reintroduced to the 111th Congress.

FOCA seeks to strike down every limitation and restriction on abortion-on-demand, basically ending the debate on abortion. President Obama promised during his campaign to sign it if FOCA passes in Congress.

The draconian impact of this bill would overturn the following checks on the abortion industry: The Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003, the Hyde Amendment restricting taxpayer funding of abortion, restrictions on abortions performed in military hospitals, informed consent laws, parental consent and notification laws, health and safety regulations for abortion clinics, requirements that licensed physicians perform abortions, limits on the use of public facilities for abortions, state and federal legal protections for individual healthcare providers who decline to participate in abortions (freedom of conscience), and legal protections for Catholic and other religiously-affiliated hospitals who, while providing care to millions of poor and uninsured Americans, refuse to allow abortions within their facilities.

In elevating abortion to a fundamental right, FOCA will endanger common-sense laws that were implemented to hold the abortion industry accountable to some regulation, as well as protect women, minor children and babies.  Please write and call your senator and representative to express your concern over the passing of this sweeping legislation. Be  a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves, the unborn children. To further research  FOCA and sign the petition against it, log on to www.fightfoca.com.
