LETTER: Thanks for great meeting

On Wednesday, Oct. 22, the Ascension Council on Aging hosted the Capital Area Agency on Aging’s annual meeting.

The event was held at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center’s Trade Mart Building. More than  600 senior citizens from a 10-parish area were on hand to participate in this meeting and Health Fair. Great entertainment was provided by Clif Nickens, a favorite of local seniors.

A special thanks to Parish President Tommy Martinez for allowing us to use the Trade Mart facility. There is no other building large enough in the parish for this type of event. There was plenty of room for wheelchairs and walkers which are used by some of the participants. The vendors who were on hand also had enough space to display their products and services. Also thanks to Sheriff Jeff Wiley for providing a work crew to set up for the event and the Lamar-Dixon staff for their assistance.

I received numerous compliments on the event and the facility. Many of the visiting parish seniors shopped at our local shopping mall and specialty stores on the return trip home. The participating Councils on Aging and Senior Centers expressed much satisfaction during their visit and are planning future field trips for their clients to return back to Ascension Parish, they had no idea of the vast opportunities of shopping, restaurants, and local tourist attractions that we have nestled in our multi-faceted community. We had many requests to host CAAA’s Annual Meeting every year.

I am grateful to have such a state of the art, user friendly, handicapped accessible facility available to the citizens and businesses of Ascension parish.
