LETTER: Reader:?Where was Wal-Mart?

Staff Writer
Gonzales Weekly Citizen

I have lived in Gonzales for several years. I have seen grocery stores such as Winn-Dixie and Albertson’s shut down after Wal-Mart expanded to a superstore. Many small businesses have also closed as Wal-Mart has campaigned to be the sole retailer for the area.

Who do you think was the last store to open after Gustav? While smaller grocers such as Ralph’s Market, LeBlanc Payless and Delaune’s were all opened under severe circumstances, Wal-Mart stayed closed. The grocers that were open were often working without air conditioning and with long, frustrated lines. Wal-Mart could easily afford large natural gas generators to support their stores on the Gulf coast.

When the storms have passed, remember the services you received from the smaller store.
