The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water Review

SpongeBob SquarePants are back in their second big screen appearance. The plot is pretty basic, When the Krabby Patty secret formula goes missing, it’s up to SpongeBob and Plankton to get it back before Bikini Bottom plummets from the lack of patties. But it’ll take time travel and even going up to the surface to retrieve it from Burger Beard (Antonio Banderas.)

Now let me start by saying that I feel the first three seasons of “SpongeBob SquarePants” are the best and I enjoyed the first movie that came out I 2004. But does that mean this movie is good? The animation is very well done and most of it is hand drawn. They are in CGI only for the last act of the movie. In my opinion this made the film not as good because when they were under water there were only a few scenes that were enjoyable and when they do go “Out of Water” is when the movie gets funny. And I’m not the first person to have said this, but there are moments that feel like a stoner movie. I felt that in some moments of the movie, especially when they time travel, I was tripping on acid. Now I’ve never had acid for the record I just felt that I felt like that in some spots.

If you’re a true SpongeBob fan you will enjoy moments of this movie. Kids will of course enjoy it and there are some moments were adults can have fun as well. I just wish they would’ve spent more time on the surface and have SpongeBob and the gang try to adapt to our world.

Overall I’ll give “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” a C. This isn’t really a movie to rush out to the cinema for. Wait for DVD and Redbox it.
