Melancon: 'I'm running'

Three-term Democratic Congressman Charlie Melancon announced this morning that he will run for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Republican David Vitter.

Melancon, a Napoleonville Democrat, made the announcement through an e-mailed Web video, linked to

"I got into public service to help people, period," Melancon said in the announcement. "And my philosophy is simple: I will work with anyone or stand up to anyone if it's the right thing to do for Louisiana. Because no matter if you are in Mamou or Monroe, it's not whether it's a Republican idea or Democratic idea — the only question that matters is: does it make sense for Louisiana?"

The election will be held in fall 2010.
