Parish Organizers Ready for Saturday’s Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day at Lamar-Dixon

Ascension Parish President Tommy Martinez announced today parish organizers and contract hazardous materials handlers are ready for Saturday’s 2015 Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center.

The May 9 event will take place from 9 a.m. till 1 p.m. The expo center is located at 9039 St. Landry Road in Gonzales. This event is for Ascension Parish residents only and will require a valid ID.

Parish Environmental Manager Don Hysell said more than 20 tons of household hazardous materials were collected last year.

“We had more than 300 residents stop by to dispose of hazardous material in an environmentally safe manner,” Hysell said.

He said collection numbers for 2013 totaled more than 22 tons and almost 25 tons in 2012.

Hysell said accepted materials include a limit of five automobile tires, car and golf cart batteries, cell phones and batteries, electronic equipment, fluorescent bulbs, gasoline, oil, antifreeze, home and garden chemicals, household batteries, ink and toner cartridges, latex and oil-based paints, thinners, varnishes, scrap metal in small quantities, rechargeable batteries, televisions, small propane tanks and appliances for scrap metal. They will also accept telephone systems, video cameras and DVR’s, computer accessories, Xboxes, PlayStations and Wii boxes, fax machines, monitors and printers. 

Materials not accepted include explosives, radioactive materials, medical waste, asbestos, high school lab waste, commercial and governmental facility waste, paper, magazines, newspaper, cardboard, aluminum cans, plastic and glass, hurricane debris or woody waste.
