On July 2, 2013, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A placed 38 year old Christopher L. Richard of St. Amant under arrest for a road rage incident which occurred in Ascension Parish.

Shortly after 6 p.m., an off-duty State Trooper was traveling home southbound on LA 1 in Donaldsonville in an unmarked State Police unit. He entered into a one lane construction zone and was traveling behind a white 2007 Nissan Murano. The driver of the Murano began driving recklessly, tailgating the vehicle in front of him and "brake-checking" the vehicle of the Trooper behind him. Once out of the construction zone, the Trooper pulled alongside the Murano, and the driver (Richard) held a pistol in the air. Richard then pointed the pistol at the Trooper.

The off-duty Trooper immediately radioed for assistance from Troop A Dispatch, and Ascension Parish and St. James Parish Sheriff's Deputies were able to stop the Murano east of the Sunshine Bridge on LA Hwy 70 near LA Hwy 3125. Deputies and the off-duty Trooper detained Richard until an on-duty Trooper could arrive.

Upon further investigation, it was determined that the pistol which Richard pointed at the Trooper was in fact a pellet pistol. However, the pellet pistol was a lifelike replica of a Desert Eagle .50 caliber handgun. Richard was placed under arrest and booked into the Ascension Parish Prison for aggravated assault with a firearm, careless operation, and no insurance.

Louisiana State Troopers, even those who are off-duty, will remain dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of the people in the state. Louisiana State Police would like to remind the public to drive safely and exercise extra patience on the roads, especially during a busy Fourth of July holiday season.

Motorists that witness hazardous or dangerous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
