Dr. Bill Cassidy today announced his candidacy for Louisiana's U.S. Senate seat in 2014. Cassidy was joined by his wife, Dr. Laura Cassidy, in today's announcement video.

He made the announcement via an online video. A transcript of the video follows:

Bill Cassidy: Hello, I'm Bill Cassidy.

Laura Cassidy: And I'm Laura Cassidy. My husband has exciting news to make, but first of all we'd like to tell you a little bit about ourselves.

Bill Cassidy: I grew up in Louisiana, I attended LSU and LSU Medical School. I've worked for the last 20 years with LSU teaching medical students and treating the uninsured in Louisiana's charity hospital system. I still do all this when I'm home from Congress.

Laura Cassidy: And I'm a breast cancer surgeon. We have three children, one in college, one in a local public high school and third one is home schooled. Among the things I do is raise our kids and I work on public charter school for children with dyslexia.

Bill Cassidy: As a family, we have decided that I will run for the United States Senate in the election held November 2014 and it's going to be a tough race. I'm running against Senator Mary Landrieu who's been there for 18 years and against the most powerful man in the world, Barack Obama.

President Obama wants Senator Landrieu re-elected. She supports President Obama 97 percent of the time, and has given him a blank check for his wasteful spending. Now Mary's a nice person, but she's changed. She used to support a balanced budget amendment but now she flip flopped and she opposes. She supports earmarks and federal spending for all sorts of things including using tax dollars to pay for overseas abortions. And she was one of the deciding votes for Obamacare.

Laura Cassidy: Which even the Obama administration admits is raising the cost of health insurance, making it difficult for workers to insure their families.

Bill Cassidy: President Obama does not want me, a conservative Republican, representing the views of the people of Louisiana, to serve in the Senate. But if elected, I will work and vote to balance the federal budget, supporting a balanced budget amendment so that government lives within its means, as does the typical Louisiana family.

I will fight wasteful spending of our tax dollars. I will protect our second amendment rights. I will promote and protect life.

I will work to replace Obamacare with policies that provide access to affordable health care. Without destroying jobs or having the government tell us what to do. And I will work to preserve and strengthen Medicare and Social Security for those who are on it and those who will be. And I will improve our economy with policies that develop America's energy resources to create good paying jobs with good benefits.

Laura Cassidy: And we're both passionate about helping families. From Bill's caring for the uninsured, and me, treating women with breast cancer, we have seen families struggle with sickness and problems with their health insurance. This concern and others drives our decision.

Bill Cassidy: If you believe that America can do better than it has for the last four years. If you believe that America's best years can still be ahead of us. And if you want a Senator who will fight for Louisiana's values, vote Bill Cassidy for Senate.

I'm Bill Cassidy and I approved this message.
