Pipeline leak

From Staff Reports

The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office is monitoring a pipeline leak just west of Hwy 44 in the vicinity of Pelican Point Subdivision in Burnside. Residents reported hearing a loud noise, similar to an explosion, at 8:38 p.m. and continued to a loud roar of escaping gas.

The Ascension Parish HazMat Unit and several Ascension Parish Fire Departments joined in the response and deployed air monitoring equipment. No hazardous gas was detected in the atmosphere, but as a precautionary measure, residents on the northern side of Pelican Point were evacuated as the source of the leak was being sought.

At about 9:30 p.m., the source of the leak was identified as an oxygen pipeline operated by Air Liquide corporation. The pipeline is being depressurized and the evacuation order has been lifted. Residents who were evacuated are being allowed to return to their homes.
