Associated Grocers Inc. announces 2015 Scholarship winners
The Selection and Review Committee of the Associated Grocers – Sam S. Politz Scholarship Fund has announced the following three winners for 2015. These scholarships are valued at $1,000 per semester for up to eight semesters, to the graduating high school students who meet all the required criteria.
The committe congratulate this year’s winners:
Emily Patterson of Prairieville, LA
Emily is the daughter of Michael and Donna Patterson. She attended Dutchtown High School in Geismar, LA where she held a 4.68 GPA and ranked three out of 506 in her graduating class. Among her many awards, she was Dutchtown High School’s Most Intelligent Student in her sophomore, junior, and senior year’s. Emily has been active in many clubs including the National Honors Society of which she was President in her senior year, Interact Club, Beta Club, and Student Council.
Emily also participates in many church and community activities including Volunteer Ascension, Stuff the Bus campaigns, C.A.R.A. pet adoptions, St. John Catholic Church
food drive, and as an extended session worker with Broadmoor Baptist Church. Gymnastics is a major interest of Emily’s. She was a competitive gymnast for 11 years, and for the past two years has been teaching gymnastics to children.
Emily will be attending Louisiana State University enrolled in Honors College this fall, majoring in Engineering.
Christian Logarbo of Geismar, LA
Christian is the son of Rodney and Jill Logarbo. He attended Dutchtown High School in Geismar, LA where he held a 4.38 GPA and ranked 12 in his graduating class of 506. He excelled in Honors and Advanced Placement classes and has a long list of accolades including being designated as an AP Scholar with Distinction. Christian has also maintained a perfect attendance record throughout his entire scholastic career.
Among many school and community organizations, Christian has been active in National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Volunteer Ascension, Special Olympics of Louisiana, School Tools, Rotary Club Food Bank Drive, St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store in Gonzales, COEA which helps handicap residents in his community, and Boy Scouts of America, earning the rank of Eagle Scout in 2013. Christian is a member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Prairieville where he is an usher, volunteer with the annual fair, food bank volunteer, and other volunteer projects with St. John’s Youth Group. Throughout high school, Christian has participated in football, track and field, and wrestling. In 2011, he was a member of the Louisiana High School Class 5A State Championship Track Team.
Christian has chosen to pursue a doctorate degree in Biomedical Engineering at Tulane University.
Adam Strickland of Metairie, LA
Adam is the son of Adam Strickland and Tara Zaabel. He graduated from Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies with a GPA of 4.8824 and ranked 2 out of 70 in his graduating class. Adam’s achievements and honors include President of Robotics in his senior year, and induction into three National Honor Societies his junior year – Science Honor, National Honor, and National English Honor. Last summer he participated in the Tulane Emerging Scholars Program. Adam has also worked part-time for Langenstein’s Supermarket since June 2013.
Running has been a passion of Adam’s, prior to, and throughout his high school years. He has run for the Haynes Cross Country Team since 7th grade and was the Team Captain in his junior and senior years. Adam excels at cross country and track and has held Haynes Academy’s three mile record for the last three years, as well as the two mile record.
Adam has chosen to attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham and plans on pursuing a five year combined bachelors-master’s degree, followed by a combined MD-PhD program. He plans on becoming a professor at a university so he can research and teach as a profession, and specifically he would like to research oncology.
