The Ascension Parish School Board in conjunction with the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office, the Gonzales Police Department and emergency services will participate in simulated emergency exercises (specifically, lock down drills) in schools throughout the school district beginning the week of Sept. 30, 2013 and continuing throughout the school year.

The ultimate goal of these exercises is to ensure the continued safety and well being of students, faculty and staff throughout the school district. By conducting exercises the school district will learn from the experiences of simulated emergencies in a school setting therefore allowing for continuous improvement in preparedness and response efforts to emergency situations.

It is important to note that these exercises are simulated scenarios only and will be closely monitored by law enforcement partners, emergency personnel and school officials. These exercises will not involve simulated actors or props.

In an effort to increase awareness additional communication will be sent out to parents, guardians and the community to notify them that lock down exercises are being conducted.

The Ascension Parish School Board, the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office and Gonzales Police Department hold the highest priorities for student safety; therefore, partnering around these exercises will only serve to improve its response to emergency situations.
