Ascension Parish, has been named one of 23 state Volunteers of the Year by the Associated Professional Educators of Louisiana (A+PEL). She was honored at a reception at the Governor's Mansion in Baton Rouge on June 11.

Sitz's many volunteer duties include coordinating volunteers for all events at the school, co-chairing the school's annual fall festival, assisting with fundraisers for Field day and being a Room Mother for her son's class.

Sitz finds being a volunteer is very rewarding. She states, "I volunteer for the kids so that each of their experiences in school are fun and memorable. Just to see how excited they are during our Fall Fest or a small classroom holiday party makes all the hard work worth it. Volunteering is very rewarding to me. It allows me to get to know everyone on a more personal basis and gives me a chance to give back to the community."

The 23 volunteers were selected by teachers throughout the state. The award recipients were nominated by members of A+PEL, a state wide, independent, teacher association with more than 7000 members. Established in 1987, A+PEL was formed to create a focus on excellence in education and to advance the recognition of teachers as career professionals. By focusing on professional development, teacher advocacy and excellence in education, A+PEL works to empower Louisiana's youth for future success.
