A Message from Superintendent Pujol

Staff reports
Ascension Parish School Board Superintendent Patrice Pujol

Parents, guardians and community members:

I am proud to announce that the Ascension Parish School System is making tremendous progress in two significant areas:  1) maintaining our academic integrity with the nation’s top school accreditation council, and 2) completing the $100 million worth of construction and facility improvement projects that voters approved in 2009.

After many months of planning and design work, major construction and renovation projects are underway at several of our campuses, and will begin soon at G. W. Carver Primary’s new location.  The school board will hold a ground breaking ceremony for the new G. W. Carver Primary at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, September 20 at the school’s new site, formerly known as the Gonzales Country Club.  Please use the address 12042 W. Main St. Gonzales, LA 70737 to guide you to the old clubhouse where parking is available. Staff will be on hand to assist you to where the ceremony will take place.

Those schools undergoing major construction and renovation projects, or “extreme makeovers”, of their campuses this year include Prairieville Middle, Dutchtown Middle, Dutchtown Primary, St. Amant Middle, St. Amant Primary and Gonzales Primary.  Large signs listing the improvements and their progress will be made available at each of these schools, and smaller displays will be available in their feeder schools. Many of our other schools are receiving significant upgrades to their campuses, including such projects as improved electrical and security systems, as well as improved and in some cases, new bathroom facilities.

For a complete list of school construction projects, including timelines for each, I encourage you to go to www.apsb.organd click on Planning & Construction.

At the same time, our district is working hard to maintain our designation of District Accreditation with SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement, an accreditation division of AdvancEd).  As you may recall, in 2006 the Ascension Parish School System became the first school district in the region to earn the prestigious District Accreditation designation.  This rigorous accreditation credentialing process requires review for renewal every five years.  So, on top of the many of responsibilities to be carried about by our faculties and leadership this year, we are also preparing to welcome a team comprised of both out-of-state and in-state evaluators on October 23-26.

These evaluators will travel throughout the district to visit our schools, meet our faculties, and review our instructional programs.  Although this comprehensive process requires an intense effort, it gives us an in-depth overview of our school system and provides us with a road map for future improvement goals.

We invite the community to be a part of this SACS assessment process, by attending a session with the SACS team on October 26.  At that time, evaluators will discuss the district and provide their report on the “state of our school system.”  The event will be held at 1 p.m. in the B. C. Alwes Auditorium in Donaldsonville.

Please take time to be a part of the special ceremonies we have scheduled in the coming weeks to celebrate the construction of a new school and the renewal of our academic credentials.  Join us as we celebrate the progress we are making for our children.
