Ethan Villar poses with Ascension Parish President Tommy Martinez.

A Galvez Primary School student interviewed the Ascension Parish president recently as part of a school project highlighting jobs in the community.

Second-grader Ethan Villar interviewed President Tommy Martinez during a November visit to the parish president’s office in Gonzales.

Villar’s interview of President Martinez will be used for a school project entitled “Jobs in the Community.”

Patty Grimball, Villar’s teacher at Galvez Primary, said her class had been awarded the “EATEL’s Imagination Press Book Grant” for the third year in a row.

She said all of the interviews will be published in a book for record and that each student will receive a copy.

“Our second-grade curriculum addresses this as a social studies concept,” Grimball wrote in correspondence to the students’ parents. “We will be creating a resource to use in the classroom and a treasure your child will have to remember his/her second-grade year.

“This experience has been very interesting,” Martinez said after the interview. “It’s a great concept to see these young students out in the community conducting interviews which will eventually be published. It really gives them a unique perspective to actually have their questions answered by someone in the student’s career field of choice.”
