BATON ROUGE – As enrollment continues to rise in Louisiana’s community and technical colleges, spring enrollment at River Parish Community College in Sorrento showed the third highest increase of the state’s 16 colleges.

RPCC experienced an increase of 31.2 percent, with a jump in enrollment of 423 students more than spring 2009. Total spring enrollment stands at 1,777 students.

Two technical colleges registered higher spring enrollment than RPCC, but the Sorrento school showed the highest gain of any community college in the state.

"As Louisiana continues to be faced with economic, budget, and workforce challenges, it is even more evident the critical role that community and technical colleges must play in helping the citizens and businesses of this state,” said Louisiana Community and Technical College System President Dr. Joe D. May. “The only way we can do this is through the continued growth and expansion of our institutions.”

All colleges in the LCTCS system experienced growth this spring, ranging from a low of 0.3 percent at Sowela Technical Community College to highs of 39.1 percent at Louisiana Technical College Northshore, and 39.8 percent at South Central Technical College.

The overall growth rate was 16.3 percent, or 9,519 more students than spring 2009.
