School Board names officers, supervisor

DONALDSONVILLE – The Ascension Parish School Board elected its officers and appointed a new supervisor of child nutrition Tuesday night.

The board approved Leona Johnson for the supervisor position. She previously worked for the Assumption Parish School Board. She will start the new job Jan. 25.

“I’m humbled, honored and elated,” she said.

The board also elected Ed Price to continue as board president. Board member A.J. Nickens made the nomination.

“Thank you very much for the confidence of keeping me as the president of this board,” Price said.

Board member Troy Gautreau Sr. was elected vice president. Former vice president Pat Russo nominated Gautreau.

In another matter, the Finance Committee met to discuss the budget. The system had budgeted for a $7.1 million loss at this point in the 2009-10 fiscal year. The difference of $6 million is revenue ($45.2 million) and expenditures ($51.2 million) is more than $1 million less than budgeted.

The majority of the loss comes from the purchase of new buses.

In other action, the board approved Baton Rouge-based firm LaTech, LLC to provide video surveillance equipment for parish schools. The systems initially will be installed in the four high schools and at Ascension Alternative. The system may expand to other schools based on the performance at the five initial schools.

In another matter, the board approved the cancellation of the Dec. 15 meeting and the Dec. 22 Finance and Curriculum meeting.
