RPCC wins technology grants

Staff reports

SORRENTO – River Parishes Community College was recently awarded two technology grants that enhance online and classroom learning, as well as provide instructional and educational tools on par with those available at some four-year universities.

RPCC received $32,000 to install eight interactive whiteboards and four interactive podiums in campus classrooms, and it received $60,000 for podcasting equipment, software and training workshops so that faculty at all LCTCS institutions can offer quality classes online.

The interactive podiums and boards, made by SMART Technologies, allow instructors to use a digital pen to write lecture notes on the podium or over presentations projected on the whiteboard.

The instructor can then save the information on a computer or memory device and make the information available for online access.

“The SMART Board and SMART Podium technology allow for better instruction on several levels,” said Douglas Weatherly, of the RPCC English Department and co-author of the SMART Board and Podium grant.

“We want our students to have educational opportunities comparable to those offered at other colleges and universities,” said Dr. Joe Ben Welch, Chancellor of RPCC. “These technology grants allow us to make those opportunities possible.”
