BATON ROUGE – Courtney Marie Stein of East Ascension High School was among the top graduating seniors honored May 17 at the Lod Cook Alumni Center at LSU.

Beginning the last week of May, WAFB-TV and Campus Federal Credit Union honored 85 of the highest academic achievers from the public and private high schools within the television station’s viewing area. The area includes 11 parishes and two Mississippi counties.

The 21st annual Best of the Class project will be broadcast through June on WAFB as a series of 60-second announcements appearing throughout the day and in primetime.

The outstanding students star in each announcement.

The Best of the Class was recorded on location at LSU. Executives from Campus Federal Credit Union and WAFB personalities were on hand to greet and congratulate the students and their parents.

Family and friends from anywhere can view photos of each graduate and behind-the-scenes shots of the production of the video at wafb.com.

WAFB began the program in 1989. More than a thousand students have been featured since its inception.

This year 85 students were honored.

“Exceptional students deserve recognition in the community as role models of excellence,” WAFB General Manager Sandy Breland said. “These are outstanding young men and women, while participants in athletic events and beauty pageants receive an abundance of media attention, the Best of the Class 2009 focuses the spotlight on these Louisiana academic achievers.”
