Art camps offered at St. Amant High

Staff reports

It’s almost summer and it’s time to plan for art camp. This summer art teacher Darryl Babin will offer three different camps: Modern Masters, 3-D Masters, and Modern Masters II.

Participants will explore different art media and will be introduced to some of the world’s most famous artists. Lessons are being held in his classroom at St. Amant High School and enrollment is limited.

In the Modern Masters class students will sling and splatter paints after learning about Abstract Expressionist Jackson Pollock. They will discuss the “energy and movement” within such abstract artwork. Participants will be taught the correct proportioning of the facial features when drawing a portrait and then will “forget all the rules” and create a “Picasso-style” self-portrait collage.

In the 3-D Masters class students will create a hand casting while being introduced to artist Duane Hanson and design a mobile after learning about Alexander Calder. They will also construct a giant pencil after seeing some of Claus Oldenburg’s sculptures.

The newest camp, Modern Masters II, will initiate projects with watercolor, oil pastels and an abstract collage. Master artists Paul Klee, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Wassily Kandinsky will be introduced.

All classes will be taught by Babin, a life-long resident of Gonzales. He has been teaching art classes for over twenty years; at St. Amant High since 1998. Babin is an authorized Advanced Placement art instructor and was named Teacher-of-the Year for the 2005-06 school year.

The six different sessions will be offered within three weeks.

Each week will have a morning session (9-noon) and an afternoon session (1-4pm).

The three weeks camp will be offered June 22-26, June 29-July 3, and July 6-10. The cost of each session is $100 and kids ages 7 – 13 are welcomed to participate.
