Sheriff Jeff Wiley has confirmed that Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office detectives are actively involved in the investigation of a shooting that occurred on Aug. 18 where a Gonzales Police Department officer shot and wounded an armed robbery suspect.

According to Sheriff Wiley, the suspect carjacked a pizza delivery driver at gunpoint, stealing his vehicle, then led the Gonzales Police Department on a 15-minute high speed pursuit. The vehicle pursuit ended on Roddy Road near Church Point Road after spike strips were deployed and punctured all four tires of the stolen vehicle.

After the stolen vehicle was disabled, the suspect fled on foot, being closely followed by a GPD officer who immediately reported that the suspect was armed with a handgun. The suspect ran through an apartment complex and encountered a second GPD officer who was in a patrol car.

Before the second officer could exit his vehicle, the suspect pointed his handgun at the officer who fired several shots at the suspect, striking him once. The suspect is currently hospitalized.

According to Sheriff Wiley, "all evidence, including independent eye witnesses, indicates that the officer involved and the Gonzales Police Department acted in full accordance with policies, procedures, and State law."
