At approximately 9:45 p.m. on Aug.15, Troopers from Troop A assisted the Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff's Office in responding to a crash involving one of their Deputies which occurred on LA Hwy 413 north of LA Hwy 414. Upon arriving on scene, Troopers learned that 28 year old Jarreau resident Travis J. Jarreau had earlier attempted to flee from Pointe Coupee Sheriff's Deputies in a stolen car. Deputies had located and were attempting to stop Jarreau as a result of a domestic abuse investigation. In an attempt to get away, Jarreau swerved into the opposite lane of LA 413 and intentionally struck an oncoming Sheriff's Office unit head-on.

Upon coming into contact with Jarreau, Troopers detected a strong odor of alcohol. Jarreau was placed under arrest for DWI (3rd Offense), and Troopers also charged him with Failure to yield to an emergency vehicle and Driving with a suspended license. Jarreau was booked into the Pointe Coupee Parish Jail.

The Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff's Office was the lead investigating agency of the incident, and obtained a warrant charging Jarreau with Domestic abuse battery, Simple criminal damage to property, False imprisonment, Theft of a motor vehicle, and Unauthorized use of a movable. The deputy suffered only minor injuries as a result of the crash.

Troopers wish to remind drivers that impaired driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana. Whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired remain the same. Troopers will continue to maintain strong working relationships with law enforcement agencies across Louisiana in an effort to enforce the state's DWI laws.
