Pregnant woman shot by ex-boyfriend

Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office Lt. Col. Bobby Webre reported the shooting of a Gonzales woman.

At approximately 4:20 a.m. Wednesday morning a female was leaving her residence when a male suspect wearing dark clothing approached her vehicle pointing a gun at her and firing several shots. She attempted to flee from her residence in her vehicle in an attempt to save her and her baby's life from the gunman that ended in her wrecking her car at the intersection.

Deputies were dispatched to the intersection of Highway 621 and Orleans Drive in Gonzales in reference to the victim still in her damaged vehicle.

Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office Detectives were called to the scene to assist in the investigation and the woman was identified as eight-month pregnant Kenyia Houston, 25, who had suffered a gunshot wound to the arm and chest.

Houston was transported to an area hospital where she had an emergency delivery of the baby and underwent surgery for her wounds. Houston and her baby are in stable condition.

Cowan Collins, 27, of 13444 Old Hammond Highway, Baton Rouge; Houston's ex-boyfriend was taken into custody Wedneday afternoon facing charges of attempted second-degree murder, attempted first-degree feticide, and illegal use of weapons. He was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail where his bond has been set at $550,000.

This investigation is still ongoing.
