Lawn mower thieves' plans cut short

During the early morning hours of April 1, Gonzales Patrol Officers responding to an burglar alarm from Home Depot on Cajun Blvd in Gonzales, witnessed a U-Haul box truck backed up to a rear enclosure behind the store that had been loaded with new retail riding lawn mowers valued at approx. $6,000. Officers began searching the enclosure and located two subjects within the enclosure, later identified as David Lewis, 32, of 7040 Boston Dr. NOLA and Jovan Murphy, 33, of 4319 Chartres St NOLA, The two perpetrators attempted to elude officers by scaling the 18 foot fenced enclosure. Jovan Murphy was immediately apprehended and a foot pursuit of David Lewis ensued. Several hours later and with the assistance of Hunts Correction K-9 unit, Lewis was apprehended in a wooded area at MM179 which is the La44 intersection with I-10.

Further investigation revealed the U-Haul truck was missing and believed to have been stolen from a U-Haul yard in NOLA. All merchandise has been recovered and returned to management with Home Depot and both Perpetrators are currently incarcerated at Ascension Parish Prison and awaiting bond.
