Family gathering turns fatal

Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office Major Kevin Hanna reports one arrest on Good Friday following a fatal shooting.

On March 29, just before 4 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a reported shooting at a home in Jamestown Subdivision in Prairieville. As deputies responded it was learned the shooter, 45-year-old Robert Earl Cosey, Jr., had fled the scene in his vehicle.

Deputies arrived on scene to find the shooting victim, 39-year-old Sheddrick Diggs, Jr., of 4219 Heath Street, Baker, unresponsive, lying in the driveway. During the search for the shooter, Robert Cosey, deputies located him driving on La. 42 at which time a vehicle pursuit ensued onto Airline Highway just into East Baton Rouge Parish. A short time later Cosey pulled over and surrendered to authorities.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Cosey and his wife hosted a family gathering at their home on Good Friday. During the gathering an argument ensued between Cosey and his wife. Cosey left out of the home and returned a short time later with a gun and again argued with his wife.

Cosey exited the home again, still armed. Sheddrick Digg's, Cosey's wife's first cousin, then began trying to diffuse the situation and asked Cosey for the gun.Cosey then turned the gun on Diggs and shot him in the driveway.

Earl Cosey, Jr., 45, of 17128 Richmond Drive(Jamestown Subdivision) Prairieville was arrested and charged with one count of second-degree murder. He is currently incarcerated at the Ascension Parish jail without bond.
