This morning shortly before 10:30 a.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a hit and run fatal crash involving a bicyclist that occurred on LA Hwy 934 east of LA Hwy 44 in Ascension Parish. The crash took the life of 49 year old Prairieville resident Frank J. Bercegeay.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred early this morning as Bercegeay (who was wearing a reflective vest) was riding a bicycle eastbound on LA Hwy 934. An unknown vehicle also traveling east on LA 934 struck Bercegeay, sending him into a roadside ditch and causing fatal injuries. The unidentified vehicle fled the scene.

A pedestrian walking on LA 934 later in the morning noticed Bercegeay in the ditch and notified authorities. It is unknown at this time if Bercegeay was impaired, and toxicology results are pending an autopsy.

Troopers have been unable to determine what type of vehicle struck Bercegeay, but believe that the vehicle will possibly have damage to the right side and/or to a right side mirror. Troopers urge anyone with ANY information to contact Louisiana State Police Troop A at (225) 754-8500, or their local law enforcement agency. No piece of information should be considered insignificant. Troopers will follow all leads in an effort to bring this case to closure and get answers for Bercegeay's family and friends.
