Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) will receive comments through February 10, 2012, regarding the revised draft Bayou Manchac Watershed Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) for chlorides and sulfates, including a proposed variance to the minerals criteria for Bayou Manchac.  Written comments must be received by LDEQ by 4:30 pm CST, on Friday, February 10, 2012.

The LDEQ will also conduct a public hearing on Tuesday, February 7, 2012, beginning at 6:00 p.m., at the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, Galvez Building, Natchez Room, C109, 602 North Fifth Street, Baton Rouge, LA. 70802.  Free parking will be available at the Galvez Garage facing the Galvez building on North Street.  Garage tickets for the hearing attendees will be validated by DEQ for the free parking.  During the hearing, all interested persons will have an opportunity to present oral statements, views, recommendations, opinions and information on the revised draft TMDL and proposed variance to the criteria.  Additionally, written statements and other documents such as charts, data, and tabulations may be filed with the hearing officer at the hearing.

Bayou Manchac, located in South Louisiana, is in the Lake Pontchartrain Basin.  The subsegment, 040201, for Bayou Manchac-from headwaters to the Amite River, includes Bayou Fountain, Ward Creek, Ward Creek Diversion Canal, Welsh Gully, Cotton Bayou, Muddy Creek, and several unnamed tributaries.  The subsegment lies in East Baton Rouge, Iberville and Ascension Parishes.

The draft TMDL report can be obtained by submitting a public records request to LDEQ’s Public Records Management Section, which can be accessed at http://www.deq.louisiana.gov/portal/tabid/2231/Default.aspx or by phone at (225) 219-LDEQ (5337) or toll-free at 1-866-896-LDEQ (5337).  The draft TMDL report is also available on the LDEQ website:
