LSP to expand Nixle Alert System Statewide

With the continued success of the Nixle Community Information and Alert System throughout the Troop A and Troop L region, Louisiana State Police has expanded the service statewide to enhance public safety and information sharing to all residents.  The Nixle service is a community information system reserved exclusively for public safety agencies ensuring secure and reliable communications to citizens over an authenticated high-speed platform.   

Through the use of Nixle, registered users are immediately notified of pertinent public safety information including evacuation orders, major road closures, parish curfews, Amber alerts, and general emergency notices.  Once registered, citizens can customize the type of alerts they receive (text and/or email), the amount and time delivery of alerts, geographic coverage area, and which agencies they wish to monitor.  Troopers additionally have the ability to send alerts statewide or to specific geographic regions depending on the scope of the emergency.

Currently, over 4,300 public safety agencies use Nixle across the country, including five state police agencies.  Nixle is supported by all major cell phone carriers including AT&T, Sprint/Nextel, Verizon, U.S. Cellular, T-Mobile, and Virgin Mobile.  Citizens can sign up by going to www.nixle.com and filling out the required information.  The public, as well as the media, is encouraged to sign up for Nixle alerts by going to the website and selecting Louisiana State Police as their agency.

While the Nixle service is designed to keep citizens informed of public safety alerts, troopers urge motorists to remain vigilant while driving and avoid distracting activities, especially the temptations of electronic devices that can substantially divert a driver’s attention away from the road.  Motorists should utilize the Nixle service to plan ahead before leaving for their destination or only during travel stops.
