Ascension Deputy among LSP award winners

Louisiana State Police honored troopers, officers, and civilians today for their extraordinary efforts over the past year at the 2011 LSP Awards Ceremony, held at the Louisiana State Police Training Academy in Baton Rouge.  Stories of bravery, dedication, and exceptional work ethic were the common themes throughout the ceremony.  Awards presented today are as follows:

Medal of Valor - for conspicuous and intrepid gallantry at the risk of the officer’s or citizen’s life while having full knowledge of that risk. The act must be clearly above and beyond the call of duty.

James Woody and Vance Matranga, Jr: For conspicuous and intrepid gallantry at the risk of their own lives with regard to their actions on May 4, 2011, while responding to calls of help from TFC Kevin Biddy during a near lethal encounter

Jared Kreamer: For conspicuous and intrepid gallantry at the risk of his own life with regard to his actions on October 6, 2011 rescuing an elderly female from a burning building

Lifesaving Award - for any act which saves or sustains the life of another.

Deputy Charles Strickland: For heroic actions on September 4, 2010 at a vehicle crash in Vernon Parish where he rendered life-saving aid to a trapped driver

Senior Trooper Robert Patrick and Pioneer  Police Chief Jamie Wallis: For heroic actions on October 14, 2010 at a vehicle crash in West Carroll Parish where they saved the life of child trapped in an overturned submerged vehicle

Trooper Jimmy Rogers: For heroic actions on October 30, 2010 on I-210 bridge in Calcasieu Parish where he successfully thwarted a suicide attempt

M/T Mark Whitmore: For heroic actions on January 19, 2011 on US 61 in Sorrento when he rescued an unresponsive victim from a burning vehicle

Trooper Jake Patin: For heroic actions and presence of mind on May 4, 2011 on LA 1 in Port Allen when he came to the assistance of a wounded TFC Kevin Biddy

Trooper Joseph Barton and Deputy Todd Bourgeois, Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office: For heroic actions on February 2, 2011 at 18312 Manchac Place in Ascension Parish when they rescued a woman trapped in a burning house

Sgt J.B. Slaton: For heroic actions on June 27, 2011 at Cypress Mound Baseball Complex when he rendered life-saving aid to a gentleman

LTC Dale Hall, Lt Doug Cain, Sgt Sam James, and Sgt Len Marie: For heroic actions on July 1, 2011 at the LSP Cafeteria when rendering life-saving aid to a cafeteria patron

TFC Robert Harrison: For heroic actions on August 17, 2011 in East Feliciana Parish assisting an Acadian Ambulance paramedic with infant CPR while en route to Lane Memorial Hospital

Civilian Exceptional Bravery Award: for an act of bravery which results in the saving of a human life, or the attempt to do so, at the risk of one’s personal safety

For heroic actions on August 18, 2011 on Interstate 10 when she placed herself in danger to save the lives of several others

Civilian Lifesaving Award: for any act which saves or sustains the life of another.

Mr. Avery Joseph and Mr. Terry Miller: For heroic actions on October 2, 2010 on LA 82 in Vermilion Parish when rendering life-saving aid to a family trapped in a submerged vehicle

Mr. Wade Gomez, Dr. Scott Petrie, and Mrs. Jennifer Slaton, RN: For heroic actions on June 27, 2011 at Cypress Mound Baseball Complex when they rendered life-saving aid to a gentleman

Mr. Kerry Johnson and Mr. Brad Rodgers: For heroic actions on July 1, 2011 at the LSP Cafeteria when rendering life-saving aid to a cafeteria patron

Mr. Michael Fritz: For heroic actions on October 6, 2011 when rendering life-saving aid to an elderly female rescued from a burning building

Service Injury – for significant injuries incurred while acting within the scope of official duty

Trooper Kevin Biddy: For injuries sustained during a traffic stop on LA 1 near Interstate 10 in West Baton Rouge Parish on May 4, 2011 while attempting to detain an armed suspect

DPS Officer of the Year – for consistent display of outstanding qualities that exemplify a member of the Department of Public Safety Police

DPS Officer Michael Dake: For exemplary dedication to the department and demonstrating unusual skill and ability in the performance of his duties

Richard Honeycutt Award – for outstanding service and dedication to duty by a Communications Officer

Communications Officer Tawanda Brown: For outstanding service and dedication to the Department of Public Safety, the Louisiana State Police, and Troop C

Meritorious Service Award – for performance of duty that exceeds the normal expectations of duty and demonstrates an exceptional degree of good judgment, initiative, and competence

Superintendents Award for Excellence - The Superintendent has the discretion to issue the Superintendent’s Award for Excellence to individuals, sections or troops in recognition of outstanding performance or achievement.  The award may be conferred on individuals, companies, schools or other entities apart from State Police
