Intentional fire started at East Ascension High School

Staff reports
The T-building was purposefully set alight by a female student.

According to Det. Sgt Steven Nethken with the Gonzales Police Department, Gonzales officers and The Gonzales Fire Department were dispatched to East Ascension High School this morning at approx 11:13 a.m. This resulted in the momentary interruption of classes for the evacuation of students because of a fire alarm.

It was discovered that there had been a fire started in a “T-Building” girl’s restroom, which was located next to occupied classrooms.

The fire was quickly extinguished and the ignition point was determined to have originated in a garbage can in the girl's restroom, which resulted in comprehensive damage.

Detectives were called to the scene and were able to identify a 16-year-old female student from East Ascension High School, who had started the fire.

When Detectives asked why she had started the fire,  the only answer she would give detectives was that she had no intent on going to school today or starting a fire,  but after she found a lighter on the ground, she decided that she just wanted to start a fire because she had a pending grudge against three other female students which also attend the same school.

Detectives have arrested the 16-year-old female and booked her on the charges of Aggravated Arson which can carry the maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and up to a $25, 000 fine if the crime was committed by an adult.

A fireman arrives on the scene.
