My Shout: Just put it on!

This has been a hard week for me to come up with writing my column. Not because the topics aren’t there, as they most certainly are, but because it’s taken me a while to figure out how to be nice about this. I figured the best way was to simply come out with it, so here goes.

People, put your seatbelts on. I’m not even going to say please, just do it.

Almost everyday I’m reading about an accident involving a severe injury or death, and someone yet again wasn’t wearing their seatbelt.

I have a lot of sympathy for people. As I’ve stated before, I think I’m a pretty nice person, but this is starting to anger me. I’ve had about enough sympathy I can muster on this subject. I’m out.

The act of putting on a seatbelt takes no time at all, but the consequences of doing so are life changing. Seriously, you can save your life simply by putting it on.

We have no idea who’s on the road when we get behind the wheels of our cars. For all we know, someone could have been drinking, or even worse taking something that has impaired their driving. Why do so many people still act like we aren’t putting our lives into the hands of strangers when we get in our cars? Strangers with tons of machinery behind them, mind you. Strangers who don’t care or think about how their actions influence ours.

I really am losing patience with this.

I have a great friend whom I love dearly, She hates her seatbelt. Hates it, so she doesn’t always wear it. “It messes up my outfit,” she’ll say, or “it feels weird.” Well, guess what. I don’t care. I couldn’t care less that you don’t like it. Wear it.

If anything were to happen to her, I would be devastated. My heart would hurt, but what if something happened simply because she wasn’t wearing her seatbelt? Then I’d also be furious. I’d be livid. That’s not how I want to remember her.

Wearing a seatbelt just makes sense. I do not want to die anytime soon. I love my life. I love my husband, my family, my friends. So many things matter to me. To even contemplate putting all of that at risk just because I can’t be bothered to put my seatbelt on seems insane to me.

I work with the police regularly in my job with the paper, and they all say the same thing. Wear your seatbelt! It’s the law! Yes, it is, but that shouldn’t even be the deciding factor in whether people put it on.

Just do it, already. Just take the one second required out of your day and put it on. Honestly, I cannot stress this enough. It is so unbelievably important an action. The time it takes can and will make difference if you find yourself in an accident.

Do it because people love you. Do it because you want to live.
