Gonzales holiday checkpoint announced
The Gonzales Police Department will conduct a Sobriety Checkpoint Saturday Dec. 18 and Thursday Dec. 23, Chief Sherman Jackson said Monday.
The checkpoint will be within the city limits of Gonzales beginning at 8 p.m. and lasting into the morning hours, weather permitting.
Officers will also be working overtime throughout the holiday season enforcing seatbelts, child restraints and speed violations with money provided by the Highway Safety Commission, the chief said.
Each year, many people are killed or seriously injured in Louisiana’s a result of impaired driving, Jackson said. Sobriety checkpoints are an effective enforcement tool because they serve as a deterrent to impaired and drunken driving.
Drivers who notice an impaired driver are asked to please contact local law enforcement or dial 911.
In the Gonzales checkpoint, the only designated driver is the person who has had no alcohol.
