Woman walking in highway struck and killed near Sunshine Bridge

Staff Report

A Plaquemine woman who was walking in an outside lane near the Sunshine Bridge around midnight Sunday died after being struck by two different vehicles, Troop A State Police reported.

Troopers investigated overnight the crash on Hwy 70 east of Hwy 3120, TFC Russell G. Graham said. Renaesha Carter, 21, was apparently walking in the eastbound lane when she was struck by a 2001 Nissan Maxima driven by Ryan Cantrell, 22, of Baton Rouge, he said.

Cantrell stopped and attempted to aid Carter, but as he was trying to move her from the highway, a 1990 GMC Sierra pickup driven in the outside eastbound lane by John Hebert, 41, of DeRidder, also struck Carter, Russell said.

Acadian Ambulance transported Carter to St. Elizabeth Hospital with critical injuries, and she was later transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries, Graham said.

Troopers suspect alcohol may have been a factor on the part of Carter and have submitted a sample of her blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis.

Both drivers were properly restrained and uninjured in the crashes.  Impairment was not suspected on the part of either driver, and Troopers have not filed any charges.
