Holden youth drowns near Port Vincent

The body of Dylan Herring, 17, of 31649 Hwy. 1036, Holden, was recovered from the Amite River at 10:15 p.m. Sunday after a three-hour search effort, Ascension Parish Chief Deputy Tony Bacala reported.

According to Bacala, Herring was attending a party at 17266 Summerfield Road in Ascension Parish near Port Vincent.

It was reported that he was attempting to swim across the river and went under about 50 yards from the opposite shore, Bacala said.

The Sheriff's Office was notified at 7:10 p.m., shortly after Herring disappeared under the water. Recovery efforts were conducted by Sheriff's Office, Wildlife and Fisheries, and area fire department search and rescue teams.
