Gonzales man dies in tanker crash

Staff Reports

A Gonzales man was killed Friday afternoon when his car crashed into a tanker truck on Hwy 70 south of Hwy 3127, TFC Russell G. Graham with Louisiana State Police Troop A reported.

Police investigating the wreck said the 1999 Chevrolet Prism driven by Ryan D. Johnson, 20, was traveling south on Hwy 70 when it crossed the center line and struck the rear tires of a 2005 Freightliner tanker that was traveling in the opposite direction.

Johnson was not wearing a seatbelt at the time and was killed upon impact, Graham said.

Although Troopers said they do not suspect alcohol to have been a factor in the crash, a sample of Johnson’s blood has been submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis.

The driver of the Freightliner, Henry D. Hockless, 48, of Jeanerette, was properly restrained when the crash occurred and was uninjured, Graham said.

No charges are expected to be filed as a result of the crash.

Hwy 70 remained closed to traffic for approximately two hours while Troopers and Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Deputies worked to investigate the crash and clear the lanes.
