Student held for bringing gun to school

Staff reports

A 16-year-old student was arrested at Lutcher High School Wednesday after officials were tipped off that the youth had a gun in his possession.

Mike Poirrier of the 23rd Judicial District Attorney's Office juvenile division said the youth surrendered a 45-caliber gun to officials without incident.

Authorities did not say if the gun was loaded.

The St. James Sheriff’s Office received an anonymous tip the teenager was carrying the weapon, Poirrier said.

The youth, whose name was not released due to his age, was being detained at the St. James Juvenile Detention Center pending a three-day hearing, Poirrier said.

A date for the hearing had not been set as of late Wednesday afternoon.
