Geismar man found dead in canal

Staff reports

Ascension Parish authorities are investigating the death of a Geismar man whose body was found Wednesday in a drainage canal along Hwy. 73.

A homeowner found a bicycle in the canal Monday and recognized it as belonging to Alva Washington Jr., 62, of 6329 Hwy. 73, according to Chief Deputy Tony Bacala of the Sheriff’s Office.

The homeowner reportedly went back to the location Wednesday after Washington had not been heard from, and the body was discovered, deputies said.

Washington’s body was found in a drainage canal about 30 to 50 yards away from where the bicycle was found, authorities said.

The initial investigation has not revealed any evidence of foul play, according to detectives.

Authorities said it is possible the man fell from the bicycle and drowned in the canal.

The Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office has ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
