Troopers warn of weather hazards

Staff reports

BATON ROUGE – Weather forecasts for the end of the week indicate a possibility of snow and ice for parts of Louisiana, which can be dangerous for motorists not accustomed to driving in such conditions.

The Louisiana State Police caution motorists to avoid traveling as much as possible, said Sgt. Markus Smith. If driving can not be avoided, use extreme caution when traveling, he added.

Precipitation in the form of rain, sleet and snow can quickly cause roads to ice over, particularly on bridges and overpasses, Smith said.

Troopers provided the following tips:

• Be prepared for delays as ice may close some roadways

• Remember that steering and braking abilities may be diminished

• Steer into the direction of a skid to regain control

• Check tires, batteries, windshiled wipers and antifreeze
