Authorities target drunk driving

Staff reports

State troopers and police officers from 74 agencies are conducting an 18-day crackdown on drunk driving.

The enforcement campaign will continue through the Labor Day weekend.

A federal grant will help pay for the 8,100 hours of overtime. The grant is expected to pay about $96,000 in overtime, according to the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.

The campaign is part of a national safety program “Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest” sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Last year 49 percent of the state’s 449 highway fatalities were alcohol-related, according to the LHSC.
