Vehicle burglaries rise

Staff reports

Reports of nighttime burglaries of unlocked vehicles have become more common in the Ascension Parish area, according to Sheriff Jeff Wiley.

Deputies typically have been called to investigate a small area, such as a subdivision, and usually multiple vehicles have been burglarized in a single night, he said.

Locked vehicles are almost never targeted, Wiley said.

Laptop computers, jewelry, money, firearms and electronic devices are often reported stolen, according to the sheriff.

Wiley said the crime can be avoided by locking vehicles and removing valuable items that might attract thieves.

Vehicles have been burglarized over the last two months in the area at the intersection of Hwy. 73 and Hwy. 74 and also the intersection of Hwy.  621 and U.S. 61, he said.

Deputies have been called most recently to burglaries in the area of the intersection of Hwy. 42 and Hwy. 44 in the Prairieville area, the sheriff said.
