Courthouse secured after bomb scare

Authorities investigate a possible explosive at the Ascension Parish Courthouse East Monday afternoon.

The Louisiana State Police Bomb Disposal Unit was called to Ascension Parish Courthouse East Monday afternoon to dispose of what was believed to be military issued explosives, according to Ascension Parish Sheriff Chief Deputy Tony Bacala.

A woman said a family member left the package at her home and told her it was believed to be explosive. She then brought the package to the courthouse where it was placed on the ground and blocked of with vehicles until State Police arrived to investigate further.

The Sheriff’s Office unloaded a bomb robot to help with the incident before State Police took the package to the Sheriff’s firing range to conduct a controlled explosion.

Authorities at the scene said that members of the public who encounter a suspicious substance, the proper action is to leave it in place and call the authorities.

A robot is used to handle the possible explosive.
