Vandalized park offers reward for information

A.Y.S.A. and Butch Gore Park are offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons involved in a recent rash of vandalism at the Ascenion Parish park, according to B. J. Romano, park commissioner.

The park concession stand was broken into twice in June and another time in July resulting in extensive damage. The vandals also stole merchandise from the park.

Romano suspects the culprits reside or know someone who lives in the Lake Martin area. In each instance a trail of stolen items was scattered into Lake Martin subdivision which is located on the back side of the park.

The person or persons involved are believed to have taken part in all three instances because mostly the same items were taken each time, while other items were left untouched, Romano said.

The second incident involved the theft of a John Deere Gator vehicle that was later recovered in the woods in Lake Martin.

In another incident, a recreational vehicle parked at the park was heavily vandalized.

The main items taken each time were Powerade drinks and chocolate.

The incidents began almost as soon as school ended for the summer, and large quantities of the drink and chocolate were taken each time.

“We strongly believe that the person or persons involved are juveniles,” Romano said.

If the person or persons involved contact Romano, he said park officials would be inclined to offer a work related payback rather than pressing criminal charges.

Anyone with information leading to the arrest of the person or persons is asked to contact the park at 225-270-3610, e-mail aysabutchgore-@yahoo.com.
