Morning deluge floods streets

Gonzales Weekly Citizen

A morning storm dropped 5.7 inches of rain in Gonzales today, leaving some streets impassable until the water drained.

"When it was coming down, there were 12 inches of water on Burnside," Scot Byrd, chief administrative officer for the City of Gonzales, said. "After the rain stopped, the drainage sytem caught up."

Byrd assisted city employees in delivering 840 sandbags to elderly and disabled residents across the city. Residents picked up about 1,700 sandbags at the city's maintenance barn.

Byrd said the majority of the rain fell in about a to-hour span, according to rain gauge measurements and other available information

"We got numbers never recorded in our area," he said. "Between all that information, it looks like we had record rain in the hours from 8 to 10 a.m."
